After a few months of selling on Amazon FBA, we had experienced a lot of success. We had profits of over$5,000.00, we had learned how to purchase liquidation merchandise and how to make our own product listings on Amazon.
When starting out as on Amazon, sellers are limited as to which product categories they can sell in. For the most part, most general merchandise product categories are available, including housewares, kitchen, dining, toys, home improvement, etc.
However, there are other popular product categories for which one must apply for and obtain, specific approval from Amazon. These categories include clothing, industrial supplies, grocery, and health and personal care.
Since we had been spending so much time sourcing products at our local Walgreens’ stores, we thought a logical step for expansion would be apply for approval to sell in health and personal care. This would include items like cold medicine, vitamins, and grooming products.
For a long time, we had avoided making this attempt. We didn’t understand exactly how strict the application process was going to be, and were a little afraid of making a mistake.
Finally, after seeing some deals that were too good to pass up, we bit the bullet, and went through the online application process to sell in health and personal care.
To our surprise, the questions were easy to answer, and within a few hours, we received an e-mail response from Amazon – we were approved!
With our easy success in health and personal care, we soon applied for approvals in additional gated categories including grocery, and beauty.
Again the process was relatively simple and we were easily approved.
I remember when dealing with the grocery category in particular, we had read a lot of complicated instructions online, and were under the impression that we would need wholesale receipts and invoices in order to gain approval. In fact, we did it with ordinary grocery store receipts and had no problems. It sounds like different sellers have different experiences based on the procedures Amazon is implementing at any given time.
One thing that is for sure, when it comes to additional approvals. It’s always important that seller scores are high for customer satisfaction, on-time delivery, etc. Fortunately, as FBA sellers, (as opposed to merchant-fulfilled), these scores are fairy easy to maintain, provided that you’re labeling, packaging, and putting together your outbound shipments to Amazon properly.
Our additional approvals came at a great time. Shortly after receiving them, we found Walgreens in the process of liquidating a bunch of their health supplements at stores all over town. The prices were around 75%-90% off. We scooped up everything we could find that had had decent ranks and sufficient profit.
We were now expanding our selling opportunities into more varied categories, which then increased our chances of finding profitable merchandise to re-sell.
